Each block fee covers everything needed to complete the specific step in your matter.  From initial filing to settlement negotiations to court appearances, with all lawyer time, communication (up to a set number of hours), document preparation, and court attendances included.

As your case progresses to the next stage— you'll receive clear pricing for that next phase before proceeding. This staged approach gives you clarity over your legal spending, allows you to make informed decisions about next steps, and ensures you're never left wondering what your case will ultimately cost.

Hourly Fee Law Firms

Most family law firms operate on an hourly billing model where you're quoted a rate—perhaps $400, $500, or $600 per hour—and asked to pay a retainer that gets depleted as your lawyer works on your file. As your case develops, the hours can quickly multiply beyond what you anticipated. Every email, every phone call, every document review, every minute spent thinking about your case gets billed in six-minute increments.

When your retainer runs low, you're asked to replenish it, and this cycle continues until your matter finally resolves—which could be months or even years down the road. The uncomfortable truth about hourly billing is that it creates a fundamental misalignment of incentives: the longer your case takes and the more contentious it becomes, the more revenue your lawyer generates. There's no motivation to resolve your matter efficiently or to push for early settlement.

How to Compare Our Fee Structure with Other Family Lawyers

When you're interviewing family law firms and comparing our fee structure to traditional hourly billing, it is important to ask the right questions so you're making an informed comparison.

Here are some of our tips:

Don't ask "what's your hourly rate?"—ask "what will my total legal costs be to reach a case conference?"  If a lawyer can only tell you their hourly rate but won't or can't provide a budget for your matter, your costs are essentially unlimited and unpredictable.

If a budget is provided – ask “what is the likelihood that this budget will be accurate”?  If a lawyer tells you that they can’t provide an accurate budget because there are too many unknowns, this is a sign of unpredictable costs. 

"How often will I need to replenish my retainer, and what happens if my case takes longer than estimated?" The reality is that if a firm can only quote an hourly rate without committing to a total cost, your matter will almost certainly take longer and cost significantly more than you initially think.

When you compare that uncertainty against our all-inclusive fee for each stage of your case, you're not just comparing price—you're comparing predictability and the peace of mind that comes from knowing exactly what you'll pay and exactly what you'll receive for those fees.

If you believe hourly billing will be more cost-effective or appropriate for your case, you should absolutely choose a lawyer who works that way. Hourly billing can indeed be the right choice for certain situations.  However, with decades of experience, we've designed our pricing to reflect the actual work involved in completing each step comprehensively and strategically. If hourly billing feels like a better fit for your situation and budget, we respect that choice—but we've found that most clients value our legal work product, predictability and legal fee transparency.
